What a Zero Actually Is, and Why Distance Changes Everything
A zero is one thing only: the distance where your line of sight and the bullet's flight path cross on the way down. It is not a setting on the scope. It is a relationship between the scope, the barrel, the load, and gravity.
Your scope sits above the bore, usually about an inch and a half to two inches higher depending on rings and rail. The bullet leaves below your line of sight, climbs through it, arcs over, and falls back through it. That second crossing is your zero. Everything before it and after it is a curve.
This is why the question is not what is the best zero. It is where do I want the curve to be flattest for the shots I actually take.
Let the Animal Pick Your Zero: Maximum Point Blank Range
Stop thinking about your zero as a distance. Start thinking about it as a window the bullet has to stay inside.
One note on the term itself. In everyday speech point blank means a muzzle contact shot. That is not what this means. Point blank range is the span over which the trajectory stays close enough to your line of sight that you do not have to compensate for it.
Decide how big a circle you are willing to work with on the animal. For a deer, an 8 inch circle is a conservative working number for the vital zone. For elk, most hunters use something closer to 10 to 12 inches.
Now split that circle in half, above and below your line of sight. For the 8 inch deer circle, your bullet is allowed to rise a maximum of 4 inches above your line of sight, and you keep shooting until it falls 4 inches below. For a 12 inch elk circle, it is 6 inches high and 6 inches low.

Your zero distance is simply whatever makes the bullet peak right at the top of that window. Set it there, and the distance where the bullet finally falls out the bottom is your maximum point blank range.
Inside that range, you hold dead center on the vitals. No holdover. No dialing. No ranging. No math while an animal is standing there deciding whether to leave. That is one number to remember instead of a drop chart.
What It Looks Like on a Real Rifle

The diagram above is one of our own rifles, not a catalog example. A 6.5 PRC on a Mausingfield action, loaded with the 140 grain Sierra Tipped GameKing at a confirmed 3,045 fps.
Feed those numbers into the 8 inch deer window and the bullet peaks at 4 inches high around 165 yards, crosses your line of sight near 297 yards, and falls to 4 inches low at 349 yards.
Read that last number again. With this rifle and this load, a hunter holds dead center on a deer's vitals from the muzzle to nearly 350 yards and never touches a turret. Notice that nobody had to decide between a 100 and a 200 yard zero to get there. The animal and the ballistics decided. Run the same math with a 12 inch elk window and the same rifle stretches to roughly 410 yards.
Two Honest Cautions
First, the distances are yours, not ours. Where your bullet peaks and where it falls out depends on your muzzle velocity, your bullet's ballistic coefficient, and how high your scope sits above the bore. Do not take a maximum point blank range number off an article. Run it with your own data. Most ballistic calculators have an MPBR function built in.
Measure your sight height rather than guessing at it. It is the distance from the center of the bore to the center of the scope tube: half your barrel diameter where the scope sits, plus the gap under the scope tube, plus half the tube diameter. Most modern hunting rifles land between 1.5 and 2.0 inches. It takes thirty seconds and it is one of the three numbers every point blank range calculation asks you for.
Second, be conservative with the circle. The window is not the size of the animal. It is the size of the zone you are confident you can keep every shot inside, including the ones you take when you are tired and the rest is not perfect.
The Part Almost Nobody Tells You: Your Rifle Shoots a Cone
Everything above treats the bullet path as a line. Your rifle does not shoot a line. It shoots a cone that widens with distance, and roughly half your shots land above the calculated path while half land below it.
That matters most at exactly the two places maximum point blank range cares about. At the top of the arc the calculated path is already touching the ceiling of your window, so half your shots are through it. At the far end the calculated path is sitting on the floor, so half your shots are under it.
Applied Ballistics ran this through their own weapon employment zone software. A maximum point blank range hold returned just over a 70 percent hit rate on an 8 inch vital zone. The same rifle, ranged and dialed, returned better than 99 percent.
There is a counterintuitive result buried in that, and it is worth knowing. Flatter cartridges lose more, because they outrun their own cone of fire.

The fix is not complicated. Shrink the window by your dispersion before you run the numbers. Take half your vital zone, then subtract the radius of your group at that distance. What is left is the window you are actually allowed to use.
Run that on the same 6.5 PRC. A rifle and shooter holding 1 MOA together give up 41 yards against the paper figure. The honest maximum point blank range is about 308 yards, not 349. At 2 MOA it is 268. The rifle did not change. The arithmetic just stopped pretending.
Which leads to the framing we would rather you take away. Maximum point blank range is your contingency for the shot you do not have time to range. It is not your primary aiming system. Range it and dial it when you can. Hold center when you cannot.
It also means you cannot compute an honest number without knowing what you and your rifle actually hold together, from the position you actually hunt from. Most hunters do not know that number. Finding it is most of what an accuracy diagnostic does.
How to Zero a Rifle for Hunting at 100 Yards
All of our zeroing work happens at 100 yards. That is not a preference about your hunting zero. It is where the measurement is honest. Redleg recommends a 100 yard or meter zero because a short zero is insensitive to atmospheric conditions and behaves predictably on inclined shots.
We Measure 100 Yards With a Tape, Not a Rangefinder
Rangefinders have variance. A unit that reads 100 when the true distance is 97 or 103 has just built an error into every number that follows, and you will never see it because the display looks authoritative.
We roll out a tape measure and set the target at exactly 100 yards, measured from the muzzle to the target face, not from where the shooter happens to sit. To the inch. It is the least glamorous step in the whole process and it is the foundation everything else rests on.

We Confirm the Rifle Groups Before We Touch a Turret
If the rifle will not group, it cannot be zeroed. It can only be aimed.
We shoot three to five round groups depending on how the rifle is behaving. If those groups are not consistent, we stop. Adjusting a scope on a rifle that is not grouping just moves a random pattern around the paper and calls the result a zero. That is where the accuracy diagnostic comes in, because the cause is usually mechanical and it is usually findable.
We Zero to the Center of the Group, Never to a Shot
This is where most sight-in sessions go wrong. Someone fires, looks at the hole, and adjusts to it. One hole tells you almost nothing. The correction you want runs from your point of aim to the center of the group. We shoot three to five, find that center, adjust to it, then confirm with another three to five at 100 yards.
Bryan Litz has been blunt for years about how badly small samples mislead shooters. His point, made about precision testing, is that if you shoot enough groups eventually one will be small, and concluding anything from that one group is a mistake. The same trap catches a zero taken off two holes.
So How Many Shots Is Enough?
The honest answer is arithmetic, not opinion. The uncertainty in your zero falls as the square root of your shot count. Three shots is not three times better than one. It is about 1.7 times better.

For a rifle and shooter holding 1 MOA together, a three shot zero can sit 1.33 inches from where you think it is at 300 yards. That is a third of your margin on a deer, spent before you have fired at an animal. Twenty shots cuts it to half an inch.
Read the shape of that curve, because it is the whole trade. Halving your uncertainty costs four times the ammunition.
The fix is not to burn a box every time you sight in. It is to stop chasing each group and start adding them together. Four three shot groups fired at one aim point, with the barrel allowed to cool between them, is a twelve shot zero. That is a better zero than any single group will ever give you, and it does not cook a sporter barrel.
Your Group Scales With Distance, and So Does Your Error
If a rifle groups half an inch at 100 yards, that is roughly half a minute of angle. At 200 yards, everything else being equal, that same rifle prints about a one inch group. The angle stays the same. The inches double.
That works for your dispersion and it works just as ruthlessly for your mistakes. A zero that is a quarter inch off at 100 is a half inch off at 200 and two inches off at 800. Everything downrange is built on top of your 100 yard zero. An error there is an error everywhere.
The Tall Target Test: The Only Real Way to Know Your Scope Is Level
Most people level a scope one of two ways. They set a level on the turret cap, or they level off a flat machined into the scope body. Both feel rigorous. Neither one tells you what you actually need to know.
Those are external references. What matters is the erector tube, the assembly inside the scope that actually moves when you dial. If the internals are not seated correctly, if the adjustment screws bear on the erector slightly off kilter, then your turret can be perfectly level while your adjustment travel is not.

The symptom: you dial pure elevation and the rifle moves up and slightly right, or up and slightly left. You never asked for windage. You got some anyway. At 100 yards you will not notice. At 600 you will wonder why you keep missing to one side and blame the wind.
How We Run It
Set up a large piece of cardboard or backer at 100 yards with a true vertical line on it, confirmed with a plumb bob or a level. Level the rifle, not just the scope. If the rifle is canted, the test measures your cant instead of your scope.

Put an aim point near the bottom of the line and shoot a group to confirm zero. Then dial up a large, known elevation correction, at least 30 MOA or 10 mils, and shoot another group at the same aim point.

Now read the target two ways. First, vertically. Thirty MOA at 100 yards should move your point of impact about 30 inches. Measure what actually happened with a tape. Divide what should have happened by what did, and you have a correction factor for your scope's tracking. A scope that delivers 29.3 inches instead of 30 is not broken, but that error compounds on every click you ever dial.


Second, horizontally. This is the part that gets skipped, and it is the reason we run this test at all. The second group should sit directly on that plumb line, straight above the first. If it walked left or right as it climbed, your scope is not tracking true vertical, and no amount of leveling off the turret will fix it. That drift is your erector telling you something.

The Mistake We See Most
Hunters confirm zero with cheap ammunition and hunt with premium ammunition.
It happens every fall. Someone sights in with whatever was on sale, then loads their good hunting bullets on opening morning because that is what they trust for the animal.
Different bullet weight, different velocity, different pressure. The zero they confirmed is not the zero they are hunting with. A different load can move point of impact several inches at 200 yards.
Confirm your zero with the exact ammunition, from the exact box, that you will carry. If you change loads, you re-zero. There is no shortcut around this one.
Your Zero Belongs to the System, Not the Rifle
A zero is not a property of the rifle. It is a property of the rifle, the load, the optic, the position, and you. Change any one of them and you have changed the zero.
The numbers are larger than most hunters expect. Moving one rifle from a bench to prone with a tight sling has been documented at a full 4 minutes of angle. That is eight inches at 200 yards, from nothing but how the rifle was held. Two different shooters on the same rifle have produced five and six inch lateral differences from trigger hand pressure alone.
Now think about where hunting shots actually come from. Roughly a third standing, a third sitting, a third prone, and the median unsupported shot is about 100 yards. Almost none of them come off a concrete bench with sandbags.
So confirm it from the position you will use. If you hunt off sticks, shoot a group off sticks. If you hunt out of a stand with a rail, shoot off a rail. You do not need a separate zero for each one. You need to know whether your rifle moves, and by how much, before an animal is standing there.
Hard rests are worth naming. Resting the barrel on anything solid will move your point of impact. A lead sled changes how the rifle recoils, which can shift impact and is hard on scopes and stocks. Rest the rifle on the forend, on something that gives, and let it recoil.
A Wandering Zero Is Usually Mechanical
If your rifle will not hold a zero, the scope is usually not the problem. We see zeros wander because of loose action screws, an unlapped set of rings making partial contact with the scope tube, a stock touching the barrel, or bedding that has compressed over seasons. The scope gets blamed because it is the part you can adjust. Before you spend money on glass, it is worth finding out what the rifle is telling you.
Your Zero Did Not Change. Your Drop Did.
Every fall someone sights in during August heat and hunts in November cold, or zeroes at home and hunts at eight thousand feet, and wants to know whether to re-zero. Two different things get confused here, by hunters and by articles.
Cold air and thin air change your bullet's drop downrange. They barely touch your zero. Inside about 300 yards the shift is fractions of an inch, which is nothing against an 8 inch vital zone. Out at 500 or 600 the difference between sea level and warm, and eight thousand feet and cold, is roughly a quarter mil. That matters if you are dialing. It does not matter if you are holding center inside your point blank range.
So do not re-zero for the weather. Re-run your drop numbers for the conditions you will hunt in, and leave the zero alone.
Four things genuinely do move a zero. A different ammunition lot, even under the same box label, can shift velocity enough to move your far numbers 10 to 20 yards. Screwing a suppressor on or off commonly moves impact several inches at 100. A turret bumped in a truck or on a pack frame. And a scope that was never holding zero to begin with, which is the section above this one.
The cheapest habit in this entire article: once your turrets are set, put a witness mark on them. A scratch or a paint pen line squared up with the index. Then one glance tells you whether anything moved. Turrets have been found 10 and 18 minutes off after a hike, and the hunter had no idea until he shot.
If You Are New to Centerfire Rifles in Southern Minnesota
Minnesota removed its shotgun only deer zones for the 2026 season. Rifles are legal across most of the state now, with the counties that passed opt out ordinances as the exception. Check your county before you hunt, because the answer is not statewide.
That change put rifles in the hands of a lot of hunters who have spent their whole lives zeroing slug guns and muzzleloaders at 50 yards. Three things are genuinely different.
Your range tripled, and so did the cost of a sloppy zero. A quarter inch error at 50 yards was invisible. The same angular error at 250 is over an inch, and it stacks on top of everything else.
Up close, scope height matters more than trajectory does. Your scope now sits an inch and three quarters or more above the bore. Inside 40 yards the bullet is still climbing up to your line of sight and will print an inch and a half to two inches low no matter what your zero is. For a stand hunter watching a trail at 30 yards, that is the number that matters, and none of the trajectory math above is about it.
A centerfire rifle holds a zero far better than a slug gun ever did. Which means when yours does not hold, something is actually wrong, and it is worth finding rather than living with.

If you zeroed at 200 yards, that is expected and correct. Your bullet is still climbing through your line of sight at 100. Do not adjust it back down without understanding what you are giving up. If you did not zero at 200 and it is still high, check your ammunition against what you zeroed with, then check your action screws and rings.

More than most people use. Zero uncertainty falls as the square root of your shot count, so three shots is only about 1.7 times better than one. Shorter than the calculator says. Ballistic software models one perfect path, while your rifle shoots a cone that widens with range.
