Every great rifle tells a story not just of craftsmanship, but of purpose. This custom build came to life through a request from Edgerton, Minnesota, where the shooter wanted a rifle that could do it all: light enough to carry through the field, yet precise enough to reach out with confidence at long range.
What we delivered was a custom mid- to long-range rifle build that strikes the perfect balance between accuracy, weight, and reliability built the Redleg way: no shortcuts, no compromise, just precision.
The Build Sheet
Component | Spec |
Cartridge | 224 Valkyrie |
Barrel | 20-inch BSF carbon fiber |
Upper | Gibbz side-charge |
Bolt carrier group | JP Enterprises |
Trigger | CMC 3-pound flat |
Stock | Magazine-integrated spare mag holder |
Optic | Vortex Viper |
Finish | Hand-airbrushed distressed bronze Cerakote |
Every one of those choices traded a little of something for a lot of something else. The carbon fiber barrel gives up nothing meaningful in stiffness but cuts barrel weight dramatically compared to a steel blank of the same profile, which is what makes a 20-inch mid-to-long-range AR carry like a much lighter rifle. The side-charge upper gives up the familiar rear charging handle in exchange for smooth charging with a scope mounted low and forward. The 3-pound flat trigger gives up nothing at all. That is what building for balance means: knowing which tradeoffs are free and which ones cost you.

Featherweight Precision: BSF 20-Inch Carbon Fiber Barrel
At the heart of this rifle is a 20-inch BSF carbon fiber barrel a perfect marriage of cutting-edge technology and proven performance. BSF barrels are wrapped in carbon fiber tension jackets, giving you the rigidity of a bull barrel at nearly half the weight.
The result? Less fatigue, faster follow-up shots, and the kind of accuracy that keeps you consistently in the 10-ring or right on the vitals. Whether you’re hunting or competing, this barrel brings precision without the burden.
Built for Function: Magazine-Integrated Stock
This rifle isn’t just about long-range accuracy it’s about real-world utility. The stock features an integrated spare magazine holder, providing quick reload access when every second counts. For hunters and competitive shooters alike, this smart design means you’re always ready for the next shot, no matter the conditions.
JP Enterprises Bolt Carrier Group: Reliability Engineered
Reliability starts at the core, and few names carry more respect than JP Enterprises. This rifle features JP’s precision bolt and bolt carrier group, known for flawless cycling, minimal friction, and long service life. Every component is precision-ground and polished, ensuring smooth, consistent performance under even the harshest conditions.
When it’s time to perform, this BCG delivers every single time.
Ease of Use: Gibbz Side-Charge Upper
Traditional AR platforms make charging cumbersome with optics mounted. The Gibbz side-charge upper changes that. It allows for smooth, easy manipulation of the action, even with a scope in place. Once you experience a true side-charger, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it especially when prone or working from supported positions at distance.
Trigger Perfection: CMC 3-LB Flat Trigger
The CMC 3-pound trigger brings crisp, predictable performance that complements this rifle’s precision focus. Light, clean, and consistent it’s the kind of trigger that helps you stay on target and break shots exactly when you intend to. This trigger doesn’t just enhance performance it defines it.
Vortex Viper Optics: Clarity You Can Trust
A rifle of this caliber deserves glass to match. The Vortex Viper scope offers exceptional clarity, tracking, and reliability for the money. From dawn to dusk, its bright glass and fine reticle ensure you can make confident hits whether you’re shooting steel or stalking game in the Minnesota wind.
Finishing Touch: Distressed Bronze Cerakote
No Redleg build is complete without artistry. This rifle’s distressed bronze Cerakote finish was airbrushed by hand right here in the Redleg shop. Each coat was applied with care to ensure not only a head-turning look but superior protection from the elements.
It’s a rifle that doesn’t just perform flawlessly it looks every bit as good doing it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why put a carbon fiber barrel on an AR-15?
Weight, and where the weight sits. A carbon fiber barrel takes pounds off the front half of the rifle, which is what you feel after a long carry and what makes offhand and improvised-position shooting steadier. On a mid-to-long-range build meant to be carried and shot in the field rather than benched, that tradeoff is the whole point.
What is the advantage of a side-charge upper?
With a scope mounted low over the receiver, a standard rear charging handle gets cramped. A side-charge upper like the Gibbz lets you run the action smoothly without breaking your grip or fighting the ocular bell, and it is noticeably easier with gloves on. We have put side-charge uppers on several field builds for exactly this reason.
How is this different from the other 224 Valkyrie in the shop?
Same cartridge, different mission. The long-range Valkyrie runs a 24-inch Krieger, a PRS stock, and a titanium suppressor: a rifle optimized for maximum reach from a supported position. This build runs a 20-inch carbon barrel and a lighter configuration optimized for carry and versatility. Both are linked below so you can compare them side by side.
