A Custom Rifle Won’t Fix Your Aim… But It’ll Remove the Excuses!

Let’s break down what it takes to build a true custom rifle.

If you're considering a custom rifle, you already know that a factory firearm might not meet your exact needs. Whether you're a long-range shooter, a hunter, or a competitive marksman, a custom-built rifle offers precision, reliability, and a tailored shooting experience. But how do you go about getting one built? What questions should you ask? And what steps are involved?

At Redleg Guns, we guide our customers through the entire process, ensuring they get a rifle that fits their purpose and shooting style perfectly. Below is a breakdown of what you need to know when ordering a custom rifle.

Step 1: Define Your Purpose

The first and most crucial question to answer is:

What do you want to use the rifle for?

This decision will influence everything, from caliber selection to stock style. Some common uses for custom rifles include:

🔹Hunting – Do you need a lightweight rifle for mountain hunts, or a heavier, precision rifle for long-range shots?

🔹 Target/Precision Shooting – Are you looking for sub-MOA accuracy at extreme distances?

🔹 Competition Shooting – Will this rifle be used for PRS, F-Class, or another specific discipline?

🔹 Tactical/Defense Use – Does the rifle need to be rugged and capable of handling various conditions?

Once you determine the intended use, you can move on to selecting the components that will best support your goals.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Caliber

Caliber selection is one of the most important choices in a custom rifle build. Some factors to consider include:

Distance – What ranges do you plan to shoot? A .223 might be perfect for short-range varmint hunting, while a 6.5 Creedmoor or .300 PRC is better suited for long-range precision shooting.

Recoil Sensitivity – If you want a rifle with minimal recoil, you may opt for something like a 6mm BR or 6.5 Grendel over a .300 Win Mag.

Availability of Ammunition – Some calibers are harder to find or require handloading for optimal performance.

Hunting Regulations – Some states have caliber restrictions for certain game species.

If you’re unsure, we can discuss your shooting needs and help you choose the best caliber for your intended use.

Step 3: Selecting the Right Action

The action is the heart of the rifle, and selecting the right one is key to accuracy, reliability, and performance. There are several action types, each with unique strengths:

🔹 Mauser 98 Clones – A time-tested, controlled-round feed design known for extreme durability. Examples: Granite Mountain Arms, FN Mauser 98, Zastava M98.

🔹 Winchester 70 Clones – Features controlled-round feed with a three-position safety, offering smooth operation and strong lockup. Example: Dakota 76, Montana Rifle Company.

🔹 Remington 700 Clones – A push-feed action known for its insane aftermarket support and customization potential. Examples: Defiance, Impact Precision, American Rifle Company, Bighorn.

🔹 Tikka T3/T3x Actions – A modern push-feed design with a butter-smooth bolt throw and exceptional accuracy out of the box.

🔹 Surgeon & Stiller Actions – Built for tactical and long-range precision, these actions offer enhanced rigidity and integrated scope rails for ultimate consistency.

🔹 Sako 85 Clones – A hybrid action combining controlled-round feed with a push-feed feel, known for high-end craftsmanship.

Each action has its pros and cons—if you want battle-proven toughness, go with a Mauser-style. If customization and precision tuning matter most, a Remington 700-style action is the clear winner. Tactical shooters might favor Surgeon or Stiller actions, while Tikka and Sako options provide ultra-smooth cycling and factory precision.

Choosing the right action is the foundation of a great custom rifle, and we’ll help you select the one that best fits your needs

Step 4: Barrel Selection

Your barrel choice will directly impact accuracy, weight, and overall handling. Here’s what to consider:

Barrel Length – Longer barrels (24-28 inches) improve velocity and long-range accuracy, while shorter barrels (16-20 inches) are lighter and more maneuverable.

Barrel Contour (Profile) – Heavier barrels help with heat dispersion and accuracy but add weight, whereas sporter profiles are lighter for hunting applications.

Twist Rate – The rifling twist must match the bullet weight for optimal performance.

Muzzle Device Compatibility – Do you need a threaded barrel for a suppressor or muzzle brake?

✅  Material – Stainless steel, Carbon Steel, and carbon fiber-wrapped options.

We ensure the barrel you choose is properly fitted and optimized for your caliber and shooting style.

Step 5: Choosing the Stock or Chassis

The stock or chassis is what connects you to the rifle, so ergonomics and fit are crucial. Options include:

🔹 Traditional Stocks – McMillan, AG Composites, Manners. Great for hunting and PRS.

🔹 Chassis Systems – MDT, KRG, XLR. Preferred for precision and tactical rifles.

🔹 Adjustable vs. Fixed – Adjustable cheek rests and length of pull improve fit.

We’ll help you find a stock or chassis that provides the right balance of comfort, adjustability, and durability.

Step 6: Picking the Right Trigger

The trigger plays a significant role in accuracy and overall feel. Options include:

Single-Stage Triggers – Crisp and clean, with minimal movement before breaking the shot. Examples: TriggerTech, Timney.

Two-Stage Triggers – Provide a "take-up" stage before the final break, preferred by some precision shooters. Example: Jewell, Bix’N Andy.

Adjustable Triggers – Allow you to fine-tune pull weight and sensitivity.

Choosing the right trigger depends on personal preference and shooting style, and we can help you select the best option for your build.

Step 7: Optics & Accessories

A rifle is only as good as the optics and accessories you pair with it. Consider:

🔸 Rifle Scopes – Match magnification and reticle style to your shooting needs.

🔸 Suppressors – Reduce noise and recoil while improving shooting comfort.

🔸 Bipods & Bags – Essential for long-range shooting stability.

🔸 Custom Coatings – Cerakote or hydro-dip finishes for durability and aesthetics.

Step 8: Final Assembly & Testing

Once all components are selected, we meticulously assemble your rifle, ensuring perfect fit and function. Before delivery, we conduct:

Headspacing & Safety Checks – Ensuring proper chamber dimensions for safe operation.

Accuracy Testing – Verifying MOA performance with premium ammunition.

Break-In Recommendations – Providing guidance on proper barrel break-in for maximum longevity.

Turnaround Time for a Custom Rifle

A high-quality custom rifle from a reputable gunsmith typically takes 10-12 weeks, but complex builds may take longer. Factors affecting build time:

Parts Availability – Some premium barrels or actions have long lead times.

Gunsmith Workload – Top-tier builders often have a waiting list.

Step 9: Placing Your Order

When you’re ready to start your custom build, here’s what you need to do:

1️⃣ Contact Redleg Guns – Call or message us to discuss your build.

2️⃣ Initial Consultation – We’ll talk about your needs, preferences, and budget.

Step 10: Cost – What’s a Fair Price for a Custom Rifle?

Pricing depends on parts, labor, and complexity. A general 2025 price range:

💲 Basic-Factory Rifle Upgrade ($2,000-$3,500) – Accuracy Evaluation, Rebarrel, Bedding

💲 Entry-Level Custom ($3,500-$4,500) – Custom action, barrel, and stock with basic components.

💲 Mid-Tier Custom ($5,500-$6,500) – High-end barrel, premium stock/chassis, tuned trigger.

💲 Elite-Level Custom ($7,500-$9,000+) – Defiance or Impact action, carbon-fiber barrel, premium optics.

At Redleg Guns, we work within your budget to get maximum performance for your dollar.

Step 11: Questions to Ask a Custom Gunsmith

A custom rifle is a big investment, and asking the right questions can make all the difference. Before, during, and after your build, here are the key questions to ask your gunsmith:

Before the Build

🔹 What is your experience with the type of rifle I want? (Hunting, PRS, Tactical, etc.)

🔹 What actions do you recommend, and why?

🔹 What caliber would you suggest based on my needs?

🔹 Do you do all the work in-house, or do you outsource certain parts of the build?🔹 What is your current turnaround time?

🔹 Do you offer a guarantee or warranty on your work?

🔹 Can I provide my own components, or do you source everything?

During the Build

🔹 Can I get updates or progress photos throughout the process?

🔹 What steps do you take to ensure precision and consistency in your builds?

🔹 Will you test-fire the rifle before delivery? If so, what accuracy can I expect?

🔹 Can I request last-minute changes or upgrades during the process?

After the Build

🔹 What is the best way to break in the barrel for optimal accuracy?

🔹 Do you recommend specific loads or ammo for this rifle?

🔹 What maintenance is required to keep this rifle performing at its best?

🔹 If I have an issue or need an adjustment, what is your policy for follow-up service?

Asking these questions will help ensure you’re getting the best possible rifle and that your investment is backed by solid craftsmanship and customer support.
